If you love texture and coffee as much as I do, you are definitely going to want to learn the popcorn stitch. The popcorn stitch cozy pattern is the perfect way to do it! I love the popcorn stitch because it is a great way to add dramatic texture with really simple stitches. To create a popcorn stitch, you only need to know how to single crochet. The Inspiration
The popcorn stitch cozy pattern was designed after the Tamzin Hat. Once I designed the Tamzin hat, I knew I wanted to create a small, fun pattern that crocheters could use to learn and practice the popcorn stitch. Since I love coffee so much, I knew that a coffee cozy pattern was the perfect answer!
Typically, when I sit down to design a pattern, I have a very specific idea in mind. This was not the case with the Popcorn Stitch Cozy pattern. One day I snuggled up on my couch with my coffee cup, Brava worsted weight yarn, my Furls crochet hook, and Netflix and set to designing a cozy pattern. I worked a few rows of the popcorn stitch pattern, held it up, decided I didn’t like it, and frogged back. After several times through this process, I finally came up with a popcorn stitch design that I loved! Unfortunately, the cozy was far too small for the mug. Oh well, that’s how designing goes sometimes. So, I frogged the whole thing and tried again! Once it was just right, I made several more!
Customize Your Cozy
The popcorn stitch cozy is designed to fit your average take away coffee cup, but I have lots of coffee cups and no two are exactly the same size. The great news is that you can customize your popcorn stitch cozy! The pattern has suggestions on ways to make your cozy the perfect fit for your favorite coffee cup!
The Perfect Gift
I know it’s just starting to get chilly, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about holiday gifts all year round. The Popcorn Stitch Cozy is the perfect holiday gift! Reasonably priced stocking stuffers for adults is one of the hardest things to check off my list. The Popcorn Stitch Cozy is perfect for anyone on your gift giving list who likes warm drinks. Small, afforable to make, and unisex it makes the perfect stocking stuffer. Add a cute coffee cup and a gift card to a local coffee shop and you have the perfect gift for teachers, friends, any coffee or tea lover in your life!
The Yarn
There are so many great and affordable worsted weight yarns on the market, any of them would be perfect for your Popcorn Stitch Cozy. I know it might seem silly, but you will probably want to swatch for your cozy. Unfortunately, yarn can be a bit like women’s jeans – even though they say they are the same size, there can be big variations in the actual yarn. As someone who’s frogged back an entire cozy because it didn’t fit, trust me, it’s worth the time to swatch!
This pattern is a great candidate for using up leftover scrap yarn from other projects! The whole cozy only takes 40 yards. While I always love a good excuse to buy more yarn, this would be a great time to look through all those left over a bit of worsted weight yarn you’ve been saving. This is the perfect project for those scraps!
If you’re in the market for new yarn…
Truth- I was gifted my first skein of WeCrochet’s Brava yarn and I was kind of hoping I wouldn’t like it. Well, that didn’t work, I love it! This yarn is super soft, and not just for acrylic yarn, actually very soft. It’s sturdy too. I have frogged it many times and it’s held up super well. It comes in a ton of absolutely stunning colors, including speckles. I’m particularly in love with Tidepool, Currant and Solstice Heather, if you need some ideas for colors!
Brava Worsted is 100% premium acrylic yarn and each skein has 218 yds/100g. The label says that it is machine washable and tumble dry. This is particularly important for coffee cozies as they are likely to get messy! I machine washed and dried some of my coffee cozies and they came out looking fabulous! At $2.99 per skein, it’s a good price for the yardage. I’ve already made a hat and a cowl with Brava Worsted and it’s worked really well for both!
Other Supplies
The rest of the supply list is pretty small. The only other things you really need are a hook (US H 5.0mm), a tapestry needle (these are my favorites) and scissors (aren’t these beautiful?).
I fell in love with and always recommend Furls crochet hooks. Their Alpha Series is my absolute favorite hook line. It’s absolutely stunning and fits so well in my smaller hands. It is one of their pricier hooks, but well worth the splurge. If you’re looking to dip your toes into Furls hooks, I love their wooden Streamline hooks too. Because of their more affordable price, I have a lot of these hooks and use them regularly. They fit nicely in my hands too, are so comfortable to work with, and glide nicely through yarn!
